Computer Repair The Consumer Dilemma

It seems as if almost everyone owns a computer these days and they may well use it for almost everything from research to entertainment to socializing. A computer may well take second place only to the cell phone with some users. However, computers can and do break down and unlike the cellphone where a substitute can work with a simple SIM card switch, computer repair can be time consuming and expensive.

At this point is where many computer owners face the question, who is to repair the broken and essential machine. A repair service or shop is always an option and usually they can do the job. However, they are not known for great speed and it could be some time before a computer finds its way home. Some owners call in technically inclined friends to help fix the computer. This might be an answer or it could end up being a disaster. Occasionally a computer owner is technically inclined and brave enough to attempt the job themselves. This can work as well as long as they understand what tasks may be beyond them.

The choice of course is up to the individual and their limits in patience and time. Computer repair shops are not necessarily known for their speed, and this can be a problem for some computer owners whose machines are part of their livelihood or simply important to them. However, when choosing a computer shop to repair the machine, most will back their work with a warranty, something that may not be present when calling a friend or attempting the do it yourself approach.

Sometimes the problem with the machine is not complex, and such problems as newly installed software causing errors or even viruses might be fixed by calling in a friend who knows how to work with computers. Unfortunately if the friend called in simply worsens the problem a computer owner is worse off with no recourse. Of course with such problems success is sometimes possible too and in that case the computer owner has saved the time and expense of using a repair service.

Some few individuals may possess the skills to attempt to repair the computer themselves. If the issue is a bad hard drive, the need for a new video card, or a sound card gone bad then some basic skills and knowledge of computers can be all that are required. However, before opening the case it should be understood that the manufacturer warranty might be voided by breaking the seal.

If the issue with the computer is not an easily replaceable peripheral then it could require more equipment to successfully resolve. The advantage that most repair shops have over the average user is an extensive array of equipment that can test bad parts and identify them. In the case of the average computer owner they rarely possess such advanced tools.

It is not always wise to attempt to repair a computer if the owner has little or no knowledge of what the parts are, and where they go. If however they feel they have a good idea of the problem they might attempt to remove the part they think is bad and take it to a local repair shop. If it is indeed bad, they can order a replacement though installing and configuring it could be a problem.

It is generally best to approach computer problems based on cost versus skills needed. A user who has no desire to learn about computers may shuttle that sick unit off to the San Antonio Computer Repair shop right away. The individuals with a little technical knowledge may choose to attempt to locate the problem themselves. However, it is always best to remember that do it yourself projects do not come with a warranty.
