Funeral services for a dearly departed is one action that helps you face your grief. Almost all cultures have a way of honoring the dead. It offers those who are in grief a source of solace, support and comfort.
Grief is an individual’s natural reaction to loss. It is the anguish that you feel when someone who or something that is part of your life, someone or something you cherish, is no longer there.
Several instances of grieving for the loss of a person or something are the following:
- a falling out with a person you have a relationship with – you lost your job – you lost that one opportunity to go after what you love doing the most – a beloved is diagnosed with a serious illness – the hospital test results came in and you found out that you are suffering from a serious illness – your spouse declares that the marriage is ended and needs a divorce – you destroyed the trust of your best friend – a pet dies – a person you love passed away
The scenarios above can all cause a person to go through a time of grieving. Still, of all the examples given, it is the loss of a loved one, such as a spouse, a son or daughter, or a mother or father, that gives so much pain. Nothing can fill the emptiness that suddenly opens up in our life when they die.
We may have shared a large part of our existence with the people who passed away. And life loses its former grandeur due to their demise. We feel the sorrow for what we have lost. Yet, in grieving, we have the hope of being able to heal our pains and strengthen our lives to move onwards once more.
All of us are entitled to express our grief. Still, we should opt for the way that can encourage us to heal after all the loss that we experienced.
Grieving is often characterized by all-out weeping each time the memory of a beloved crosses our mind. Tears are not the only signs of sorrow. A person could be silent yet deep inside the waves of strong emotions are churning.
Also, grieving, in contradiction to what is commonly said, does not last for a set time period. The span of the grieving process will be different for an individual compared with another. If you are undergoing a grieving period, don’t rush yourself to immediately “get over it.” Time is a great healer.
